Residence Certificate in Bangkok: prepare the right document

What is the certificate for?

Here, Residence Certificate means proof of your address for an agreed administrative task. Bangkok Immigration uses separate purpose fields for matters such as driving licences and buying or selling vehicles. Obtain the current application directly from Bangkok Immigration; do not reuse an older downloaded form.

This address document does not grant permanent residence or extend your permission to stay. When someone asks for a “residence certificate”, confirm the intended issuing authority and use. Documents with similar English names are not automatically interchangeable.

Decide the purpose and number of originals first

Tell the reviewer:

• The task: car licence, motorcycle licence, both categories or a vehicle-related procedure
• The office or organisation requesting the certificate, if known
• Whether one or several people are applying
• Whether you already hold an original certificate, its issue date and its stated purpose
• When the receiving appointment or transaction is planned

Ask the receiving office how many originals it needs. Do not assume that a photograph or photocopy replaces an original, or that one certificate can be used for several different procedures. Equally, do not order extra originals before the requirement is clear.

Documents to have ready for review

The case plan identifies the supporting evidence, originals, signatures and any attendance needed. If an item is missing, tell the coordinator what you have so the next step can be organised.

Check three details before you go further:

1. Identity: is the name consistent with the passport you will use?
2. Address: do the building, room, district and other details describe your current accommodation consistently?
3. Dates: will your stay evidence and the certificate's issue date fit the intended submission?

If you have moved or recently re-entered Thailand, mention it. A current address and an old supporting record should be reviewed together before completing the application.

How TM30 fits into the preparation

TM30 is the accommodation-notification process. Immigration's official manual describes the notification by the accommodation host or operator. It is a separate record from the residence letter used for your licence or vehicle task. Immigration's TM30 guidance.

If you do not have a copy, ask your hotel, landlord or accommodation manager what has already been filed and whether they can provide the record. Not having a copy yourself does not tell us whether a notification exists.

If the certificate is for a driving licence

Coordinate it with the licence application instead of treating it as an isolated errand:

• Confirm conversion, renewal or a first application.
• Confirm car, motorcycle or both.
• Check which address document the receiving DLT office accepts.
• Confirm the number of originals and the acceptable issue-date window.
• Fit certificate preparation around the appointment and other required documents.

If you already have an embassy-issued address document or another form of address evidence, have it checked before ordering a new certificate. Acceptance is a question for the receiving procedure, not something determined solely by the document's English title.

Timing: preparation, processing and delivery

Before agreeing a start date, resolve missing evidence and the intended use. Then agree how the originals will reach you. “Ready for collection” and “delivered to your address” are different milestones; include that difference when planning a DLT visit.

Applying yourself or using BKKFIX

Current-form and Bangkok case checks

Before submitting, confirm with the office that the form is still current, which supporting documents are required and how applications are accepted.

For pre-check, prepare the passport bio page, applicable visa evidence, latest entry stamp and the current Bangkok TM30. The address written in the application should match the supporting TM30 record. Confirm the exact attachments, number of originals, appointment or walk-in method, personal-attendance rule and any 90-day-report dependency with Bangkok Immigration and the receiving DLT.

RC, TM30, medical certificate and translation: what each document does

Several documents can feature in a Thai driving-licence application. They serve different purposes; buying one does not replace the others.

Address documents: RC and TM30

A Residence Certificate (RC) is address evidence for the intended administrative task. Confirm the purpose, receiving office, accepted issue date and number of originals before ordering. Two applications do not justify guessing how many originals will be accepted.

TM30 is accommodation notification, not the Residence Certificate itself. Ask your hotel or landlord for the existing record first. Having no copy does not necessarily mean nothing was filed. Any supporting address must reflect your actual accommodation. BKKFIX coordinates related TM30 work only with an ordered Residence Certificate, when needed for an accepted case and agreed in advance, at +1,000 THB per case if selected. Medical certificate, licence and translation

The medical certificate concerns medical fitness; the foreign licence shows driving entitlement. An IDP and a certified translation have different functions. Check what the receiving office accepts for your particular licence rather than paying for both automatically. Do not assume that either document adds motorcycle entitlement.

Ask which originals are retained, whether separate medical documents are needed, how recent they must be, and what must be brought in person. Arrange date-sensitive documents around the application—not weeks earlier without checking.

A simpler first enquiry

State the task, held categories, document language, arrival and departure dates and whether Bangkok accommodation is arranged. Do not put passport numbers in the initial form. Later, provide only the copies required for the agreed review through the confirmed contact channel.
