Transfer car or motorcycle ownership in Bangkok

A signed sale agreement and handed-over keys do not change the registered owner. The transfer is completed through DLT after the vehicle file, both parties’ signatures, inspection requirement and fees are accepted.

This guide covers an ordinary sale of a vehicle already registered in Thailand. Inheritance, active finance, registration holds, diplomatic or commercial vehicles need a separate route.

Official-fee calculators

Use public vehicle details only. The figures are estimates for checking a case, not a DLT assessment or a BKKFIX quote.

Transfer fees and stamp duty

The stamp-duty base is the higher of the declared sale price and the DLT assessment when that assessment is known. For stamp duty, the calculator uses THB 1 for each THB 200 of the base, rounding up for any partial THB 200.

A company seller does not by itself prove a stamp-duty exemption. Leave the answer as unknown unless the exemption has been confirmed for this transaction.

Leave blank if DLT has not confirmed it.

Annual tax for an eligible private passenger car

This separate calculator applies only to a passenger car with no more than 7 seats, an internal-combustion engine and an individual registered owner.

Annual tax is shown separately and is never added automatically to the transfer-fee and stamp-duty result.

Calculated only in this browser. Do not enter passport or document numbers, and do not upload scans. Check the result before using it in an enquiry.

Rates and applicability still need checking against the current vehicle record and DLT assessment.

01

Check the vehicle before paying

  • Match the seller to the registered owner and compare the vehicle details with the original blue registration book.
  • Check tax arrears, finance and registration holds before treating the file as transferable.
  • Identify the current province, the buyer’s address province and whether a province change is required.

The government service card says the standard transfer requires no tax arrears or registration hold and normally requires the vehicle to be presented for inspection. Official transfer service.

02

Seller and buyer documents

The seller prepares the original vehicle registration book, identity documents and signed copies, the transfer/sale documents and a power of attorney if a representative is used. The buyer prepares identity documents, the signed acceptance section and, for a foreign buyer, passport, current stay evidence and address evidence accepted by DLT.

Both transferor and transferee sign the prescribed transfer form. Do not sign blank forms. A company, finance provider, estate or foreign seller can require a different set.

03

Inspection and a previous inspection result

The normal route includes vehicle inspection. If an inspection has already been completed, ask the chosen DLT whether that exact result is accepted for this transfer. Provide where and when it was done and the result document.

A previously accepted result in one case is not a general exemption. If DLT does not accept it, arrange the required vehicle presentation.

04

Presence, signatures and power of attorney

The official service card permits a representative with a power of attorney and signed identity copies. This does not mean every buyer and seller can always stay away: confirm the form, certification and which originals the selected DLT needs.

Acceptance of an earlier inspection and acceptance of representation are separate decisions. Approval of one does not establish the other.

05

DLT sequence

  1. Verify the vehicle registration book, ownership, sale documents, tax and any hold.
  2. Confirm the competent DLT office and any inter-provincial route.
  3. Prepare both parties’ documents, signatures and any power of attorney.
  4. Present the vehicle or obtain confirmation that the existing inspection result is accepted.
  5. Submit the complete file, pay assessed fees and receive the updated book and receipt.
  6. Check the new owner, passport details and vehicle data before leaving.
06

Fees, notice period and timing

The official card lists a 5 THB application fee and 100 THB registration-transfer fee, plus case-dependent stamp duty and other assessed amounts. It says the transfer must be notified within 15 days from the date the vehicle is transferred. Official service card.

These figures are not the full transaction price. Do not promise one-hour or same-day completion: published processing time starts after a complete file is accepted and excludes queueing time, system problems, inter-provincial work and corrections.

07

Practical pre-check

For the initial quote and procedure check, send only a non-sensitive summary: vehicle category and province, whether buyer and seller are individuals or companies, whether a vehicle-inspection result exists and whether a representative is planned. Do not send passport or document numbers, signatures, exact private addresses or scans in the first enquiry. If documents are later required, BKKFIX will confirm what to share and the agreed secure handoff. Price and turnaround are confirmed only after review.

Never publish private correspondence, personal identifiers or signatures. Send sensitive originals only through the agreed secure handoff when specifically required.

08

Do it yourself or reduce repeat visits

You may complete the transfer yourself using the official DLT route. BKKFIX can review both sides’ documents, identify the office, prepare the sequence and power-of-attorney pack where permitted, and accompany the filing to reduce avoidable repeat visits.

DLT decides whether documents, representation and any existing inspection result are accepted. Assistance does not remove a required inspection, signature or personal appearance.

Can we transfer without bringing the vehicle again?

Only if the chosen DLT confirms that the existing inspection result is accepted for this transaction. A previous case does not create a universal exemption.

Must buyer and seller attend together?

Not universally. Representation can be possible with the prescribed power of attorney and documents, but confirm the exact arrangement with the receiving DLT.

Is 105 THB the full cost?

No. It is the listed application and transfer-registration fees only. Stamp duty and other case-specific amounts may apply.
